Soft Power Ambassadors
- President Tsai Ing-wen appointed seven “ambassadors-at-large” this week, putting actual faces to Taiwan’s soft power diplomacy. The ambassadors include NTU professor Fan Yun (on women’s empowerment), Olympic medalist Chi Cheng (on sports), and Hung-Tze Jan (on digital matters). Panama, one of Taiwan’s longest allies, broke formal relations in Beijing’s favor in May. Will President Tsai rely more on people to people exchanges to keep Taiwan globally relevant?
Bring Your Own Bags
- On Thursday, big box retailers RT-Mart, Carrefour, and Far Eastern A.Mart in Taiwan announced plans to gradually stop providing plastic bags, starting July. This signals the next phase of Taipei’s green initiative, and can potentially help Taiwan become a regional example in Asia. In the meantime, Plastico can turn your plastic bags into cool stuff.

- Somehow, Taipei seems to have a certain magical power that keeps us here. Yes, life can be quite frustrating with a stagnant economy and rising costs of living. But life can’t always be this miserable in a city that still possesses a great deal of potential.
